Mary Harcus and Marcus Horne Elphinstone

Mary Harcus (b. 26th November 1873) was the oldest of the five children of John Harcus and Barbara Drever. On 6th September 1896, she married Marcus Horne Elphinstone in Albert St, Kirkwall.

Marcus was a farm servant from Skaill in Eday. He was born on 1st April 1861 in Eday and the son of John Elphinstone and Mary Chalmers, who had moved to Eday from Stronsay sometime between 1853 and 1856.

The 1901 census shows Marcus and Mary with their first child at Skaill:

Mary and Marcus had two daughters:

  • Mary Ann Elphinstone who was born at Sanquoy, Eday on 16th August 1897 and had family. She moved to Tankerness and subsequently to Moy, near Inverness with her husband.
  • Barbara Drever Elphinstone who was born there on 3rd April 1901. Barbara died of tuberculosis at Purgatory, Eday on 1st May 1918.

Mary Harcus died at Purgatory, Eday on 17th April 1916. She was forty two.
