David Drever and Ann Reid

David Drever was the only son that is known for certain of Thomas Drever and Ann Hourston. He was born about 1789.

David married Ann Reid, the daughter of John Reid and Janet Bews from Westray, about 1814. Ann was baptised in Westray on 1st March 1794

They had four children born on Pharay:

  • John Drever c. 18th July 1815 who married Barbara Groat
  • Thomas Drever c. 19th December 1818 who married Jane Groat and subsequently Mary Harcus
  • James Drever b. 15th June 1828 who also married a Mary Hercus but no relation to the second wife of James’s brother, Thomas

Barbara Groat and Jane Groat were sisters, daughters of Robert Groat and Janet Guthrie from Quoy. Mary Groat was their niece.

David and Ann were living at Hammar by the first census in 1841 and spent the rest of their lives there. The two youngest sons, David and James, were still with their parents at this time, aged fifteen and twelve respectively. The oldest son, John Drever, was married and formed a separate household there with his wife and their first child.

The census of 1851 describes David as a farmer of five acres arable and twenty five acres pasture lands. By 1861, he is described as a retired farmer. There are separate households at Hammar for younger sons, David and James, and their wives and families.

David died at Hammar on 1st January 1866. Ann died later on 9th March 1873, also at Hammar.
