Barbara Drever and William Craigie

Barbara Drever (b. 9th January 1856) was one of the twins of John Drever and Mary Peace. She was at Southhouse in Eday with the family in 1861.

She married widower William Craigie (b. about 1838) from Shapinsay on 22nd May 1879. He was the son of Magnus Craigie and Rebecca Craigie who had come to Shapinsay from Egilsay in the late 1820s. William’s first wife, Agnes Laughton, had died on 11th September 1876 at the age of thirty, leaving William with their daughter Agnes Jane Craigie.

William and Barbara had four children born on Shapinsay:

  • William Alexander Craigie b. about 1880
  • John Craigie b. about 1882
  • James Craigie b. about 1884
  • Mary Ann Craigie b. about 1886

In the 1881 census, William is described as a farmer of 140 acres. Sometime between 1891 and 1901, the family moved from Howe to Brecks and Myres. Sons John and James had moved away but Agnes, William and Mary remained.

William Craigie died in Garden St, Kirkwall on 20th November 1926 at the age of ninety. Barbara Drever died there a week later on 27th November 1926.
