James Drever and Margaret Angus

James Drever (b. 15th October 1859) was the seventh of the eleven children of John Drever and Mary Peace.

James married Margaret Angus (b. 18th December 1856), the daughter of James Angus and Margaret Laughton Allan in Kirkwall, in 1888.

The Drever and Angus families knew each other in Eday. The Angus family were at Heathercow, Eday in 1861 but moved to Southhouse while by 1871, James’s parents and family members had moved from Southhouse to nearby Panhouse.

James and Margaret had four children who were born in Eday:

  • Margaret Drever b. about 1889 who married James Miller (b. about 1889) in Kirkwall in 1909. James died on 29th May 1966 and Margaret at Ferniebrae, Eday on 13th September 1976. She was eighty seven.
  • Mary Ann Drever b. about 1890 who married Thomas Tulloch, the son of James Baikie Tulloch and Jessie Tulloch in Kirkwall in 1923. They went to Sanday after the Second World War, which is the island that Thomas’s father had come from. They stayed at Nearhouse in Sanday. Thomas died on 9th July 1963, aged seventy two. Mary died seven years later on 24th May 1970. She was seventy-nine.
  • Jessie Drever b. about 1893
  • Christina Drever b. about 1895

They were with James’s parents at South Panhouse, Eday in 1891 with their first two children. James’s occupation is given as fisherman. His parents were still alive at the time of the 1901 census and James’s occupation was given as farmer’s son. Their four children were with them at Panhouse, forming a separate household from James’s parents, who were still alive.

Margaret died at South Panhouse on 14th July 1935. Her son in law, James Miller of Ferniebrae reported her death.

James died on 26th December 1940 at Warrenha, Eday. His son in law, Thomas Tulloch, reported the death. James was eighty one.
