John Harcus

John Harcus (b. abt. 1842) was the youngest of the eight children of Robert Harcus and Margaret Shearer.

He married Ann Reid at Luan, Eday on 6th April 1865. Ann was born on 11th October 1844 and was the daughter of William Reid and Ann Hourston.

John and Ann had one son, who was born in Eday:

  • William Harcus, born 20th September 1865

Ann died less than a fortnight later on 3rd October 1865 at Stenaquoy.

John remarried on 18th October 1881. His second wife was Mary Muir (b. 24th December 1846). Mary was the daughter of David Muir and Robina Peace from Caldale. Mary had also been married previously, her first husband being Peter Tulloch and she had a son, also Peter Tulloch, who was born on 6th October 1873. Mary had been with her son Peter in Albert St., Kirkwall at the time of the 1881 census.

John and Mary had three children:

  • John Harcus, born 1882 who married Jessie Edith Cutt (b. 1888) in Kirkwall in 1916 at her home at 25 Main St., Kirkwall. Jessie was the daughter of Thomas Cutt and Mary Paterson. She died on 2nd August 1962 and John on 20th September 1966.
  • Robert Harcus, born 1884; d. 1917
  • Mary Ann Harcus, born 1887 who married (1) Robert Sinclair in Kirkwall in 1917 and (2) John Stevenson in Edinburgh in 1923.

John was a seaman / fisherman. The family, including Peter Tulloch (John’s step-son), were at 22 Shore St., Kirkwall in 1891.

Peter had left 22 Shore St by 1901. At that time, the occupation of both John Harcus jnr and Robert Harcus was seaman while their father’s occupation was again given as fisherman.

Mary died in Albert Sq., Kirkwall on 7th May 1933. She was already a widow for a second time.
