Burgher

The family name has had quite a number of changes of spelling and variations over the years including Burgher, Burgess and Burgar.

Thomas Burgher and Elizabeth Seatter came from Westray around 1850 and lived at Cott as did subsequent generations:

• Robert Burgess (son) who married Elizabeth Hercus of Doggerboat

• William Burgess / Burgar (grandson) who married Mary Stewart Groat from Ferseness, Eday

William Burgar and Mary Stewart Groat left Cott and moved to Ferseness around 1915.
