Mary Stout and James Smith

Mary Stout (b. 18th October 1848) was the eldest of the children of Lawrence Stout and Jean Leslie.

She married James Smith (b. abt 1827, Ayrshire) at the Manse in the Lady parish of Sanday on 30th November 1868. James’s first wife, Jane McCall, had died on 7th April 1868.

He was the principal lighthouse keeper at Start Point, Sanday in 1871.

Also with James and Mary at that time was James’s nineteen year old daughter, Janet Smith, who was born in Dundonald, Ayrshire.

James and Mary are known to have had one daughter who was born in Sanday:

  • Reubina Mary Smith, born 12th October 1869. She died on 28th December 1870 and a stone in the graveyard in Lady parish, records both her death and that of Jane McCall.

In 1881, Mary was a visitor of an Alexander family in Lanarkshire

In 1889, Mary was in Edinburgh and the informant to the death registration of her father who died in St Giles Infirmary. It is not known what happened to the family subsequently.
