Jean Leslie and Lawrence Stout

Jean Leslie (c. 13th January 1828) was a daughter of George Leslie and Jean Hourston.

She was with the family at Grimbust, Westray in 1841 and married Lawrence Stout on 31st December 1847. Lawrence was born at Taing, Fair Isle on 25th May 1826 and the son of George Stout and Ellen Wilson. (See Stout Genealogy)

Jean and Lawrence were at Braeside in 1851 with the start of their family, which eventually comprised:
  • Mary Stout, born 18th October 1848 who married James Smith
  • Ellen Stout, born 1851
  • George Stout, born 17th April 1853 who married Isabella Jane Bews

Lawrence was a farmer and according to the 1871 census farmed 12 acres. He died at St Giles Infirmary in Edinburgh on 11th September 1889 although he stayed in Westray. The informant was his daughter, Mary Stout.

Jean died at Braeside on 1st January 1901.
