Relationship Between Jemima Stout and William Burgher

The marriage register covering the marriage of Jemima Stout and William Burgher in North Leith on 23rd December 1878 indicates that they were first cousins.

Jemima was the daughter of Lawrence Stout and Jane Leslie while William was the son of John Burgher and Mary Leslie.

William’s parents lived at Tafts in Westray. His mother died on 8th September 1903 at the age of eighty six. The death register has Mary as the wife of John Burgher, tailor but her father is not mentioned. Her mother is Mary Schollay. The informant is her youngest daughter.

There is a Mary Leslie born in Westray at the appropriate time. She was baptised on 16th November 1816 and the natural daughter of George Leslie and Mary Scollay.

While first cousins implies common grandparents, it is possible that Jemima and William had a common grandfather only, due to a daughter born prior to George Leslie’s marriage to Jean Hourston.
