James Rendall and Mary Stevenson

James Rendall and his wife Mary Stevenson came to Hammar around 1915, having married in Westray in 1911.

James (b. 24th January 1887) was the son of George Rendall and Barbara Cooper from Breck o’ Aikerness. Mary (b. 2nd July 1890) was the daughter of William Stevenson and Jean Rendall from Perth, Westray.

They had six children, three of whom were born in Westray before the move to Pharay. Each attended the school in Pharay.

The family moved to Shapinsay towards the end of 1937 and farmed there. James and Mary subsequently retired to Kirkwall.

James died on 26th October 1964 and Mary on 29th December 1968.
