Robert Reid

Robert Reid (b. 21st October 1849) was a son of James Reid and Mary Sinclair from Quoyfaulds, Eday.

He married Agnes Scarth Bain Chalmers (b. abt. 1852) at Shore St, Kirkwall on 3rd January 1878. Agnes was a daughter of James Chalmers and Amelia Greig.

Robert and Agnes had five children who were all born in Kirkwall:

  • Barbara Anne Reid, born 8th August 1878
  • James S S Reid, born abt. 1882
  • John W Reid, born abt 1887
  • Alice Reid, born abt. January 1891 who married John Walls in Kirkwall in 1911.
  • Robert Reid, born abt 1893

They were in Twart’s Close, Long Wynd and Harbour St over the censuses from 1881 to 1901. Over this period, James’s occupation was given as general labourer, carter and quarry man.

Agnes died in Kirkwall on 1905 at the age of fifty two.

Robert remarried in Kirkwall on 24th November 1911. His second wife was widow, Jemima Thomson, the daughter of James Thomson and Jane Sinclair.

Robert died at 6 Long Wynd, Kirkwall on 15th March 1924. Jemima died on 6th May 1930. Her step-daughter, Alice Reid, reported her death. The gravestone in St Olaf’s Cemetery also records the death of John Clouston, a son of Jemima’s first marriage, who was lost at sea in 1903, aged twenty three.
