Sarah (Sally) Harcus and James Harcus

Sarah (Sally) Harcus (b. 10th May 1830) was a daughter of Robert Harcus and Margaret Shearer, Luan, Eday

She married James Harcus (b. 25th April 1826) of Shuttleha, Eday on 21st December 1854. James was the son of weaver James Harcus and Rebecca Scott.

They were at South Fara House by 1861 with the start of their family and were to remain there. Sarah and James had nine children:

  • James Harcus, born 26th September 1855 who married Jane Drever
  • Margaret Harcus, born 18th January 1858. Margaret was a dressmaker who died in Kirkwall on 29th June 1955.
  • William Harcus, born 1860
  • Ann Harcus, born 15th August 1862 who married Robert Shearer
  • Robert Harcus, born 13th June 1865
  • John Harcus, born 11th January 1870
  • David Harcus, born 10th April 1872 who married Mary Gibson in Kirkwall in 1914
  • Peter Harcus, born 3rd February 1874 who married Isabella Tulloch (b. 29th September 1893) at Dale in the West Side of Eday on 24th May 1924. Isabella was the daughter of John Tulloch and Mary Sandison from Dale.

James’s occupation per the census was both fisherman and crofter although from 1861 there does seem to be a progression from fisherman to croft.

He died at South Fara House on 3rd April 1908. Sarah died at Upper Dykeside on 27th November 1914. This was the home of her daughter, Ann Harcus, and her husband Robert Shearer.
