Robert Harcus

Robert Harcus (b. 10th December 1797) was a son of William Harcus and Mary Sinclair.

Robert married a Sarah Scott on 13th April 1824 although nothing further is known about her and there is no information regarding children. The marriage is included in the Old Parish Records and Sarah’s name is included on the death register for Robert.

A second wife is also named on the death register. She is Margaret Shearer (b. 10th April 1807) whom Robert married in Kirkwall on 5th March 1829. Margaret was the daughter of Magnus Shearer and Christina Reid.

Robert and Margaret had at least eight children:

  • William Harcus, born abt 1834
  • Robert Harcus, born abt 1836 who married Margaret Rousay. Margaret was a sister of Robert Rousay.
  • John Harcus, born abt 1842 who married (1) Ann Reid and (2) Mary Muir

The family lived at Luan and can be seen there from the 1841 census through to 1861.

Margaret died at Cocklepark on 9th September 1864, this being a Rousay house. Her son, Robert Harcus, reported the death.

Robert was with his daughter Joanna Harcus and her husband, Robert Sinclair, at Sandhill, Eday in 1871 and with daughter Christina (Jessie) Harcus and her husband, Robert Miller, at Sandybank, Eday in 1881. He died there on 8th October 1882.
