William Harcus Miller and Jane Thomson

William Harcus Miller (b. 26th February 1858) was a son of Robert Miller and Christina Harcus of Sandybank, Eday.

In 1881 he was a boarder in a house in Shore St, Kirkwall run by a Margaret Shearer who was also from Eday. His occupation was given as tree cutter.

William married Jane Thomson in Kirkwall in 1886. Jane was born in Shapinsay on 23rd September 1865 although her parents, Thomas Thomson and Ann Muir, had come from North Ronaldsay shortly before.

They were in Leith for a time then returning to Orkney. Their first two children were born in Leith with subsequent children in Stromness.

They had at least seven children:

• Annie Jane Miller, born abt 1887

• William Miller, born abt 1889

• Alfred Miller, born abt 1892

• Edith Miller, born 9th August 1895; died 27th December 1977

• Lizzie Miller, born about 1897

• Christina Miller, born about 1899

• Maggie Miller, born about 1900

William died on 19th June 1908 and Jane on 27th November 1945.
