Christina Harcus and Robert Miller

Christina Harcus (b. 25th October 1831) was a daughter of Robert Harcus and Margaret Shearer.

She was brought up with the family at Luan, Eday and married Robert Miller from Greenenave on 8th November 1855. Robert was the son of Robert Miller and Barbara Omand and born on 28th March 1832.

Christina and Robert had seven children, six of whom were born in Eday:

  • Robert Miller, born 5 March 1856 who married Jessie Ann Sandison
  • James Omand Miller, born 28th April 1860. He was with the family at Sandybank in 1881 but in Hill St., Motherwell in 1891. James married Eliza Saunders (b. 1865) in Kirkwall on 30th June 1891. Eliza was the daughter of Peter Saunders and Mary Loutit. James and Eliza had a son, James Robert Miller, who was born in 1892 in the Dalziel district of Lanarkshire. James died in Motherwell on 23rd February 1903. Their son married and had family.
  • Margaret Miller, born 8th September 1862. She died at Sandybank, Eday on 4th February 1881.
  • Barbara Miller, born 29th July 1870 and died in Canada

They stayed at Sandybank, in the West Side of Eday. Robert was a carpenter in 1861 and in subsequent censuses was variously boat carpenter and crofter.

For a short time during the 1860s, they stayed at Luan, Rendall in the West Mainland of Orkney and it was in Rendall that their fifth child was born. The family subsequently moved back to Sandybank.

Christina and Robert’s son, James Miller, formed a separate household at Sandybank when he married. Following the death of Robert’s father at Greenenave in 1885, he and Christina moved there.

Christina died on 8th September 1913 back at Sandybank. Robert died on 15th February 1921 at Greenenave.
