Introduction / Families / Reid / Elizabeth Reid and James Allan

Ann Allan and John Gullion

Ann Allan (b. 27th March 1828) was a daughter of James Allan and Elizabeth Reid. She married John Gullion at her home at North Pharay, Eday on 23rd November 1855

John was a son of John Gullion and Mary Harcus and baptised on Eday on 8th October 1830.

Ann and John had four children, all born on Eday:

  • John Gullion, b 1856. A John Gullion, born Scotland, age 24, was in Dane Co., Wisconsin, USA in 1880, but was not found thereafter. It is not known what became of him.
  • James Gullion, b.1860 who was a general labourer and lived at Shoehall with his parents through at least 1901. In 1910 he married Betsy Stout. (See Stout Genealogy.)
  • Ann Gullion, b. 6th May 1863. She lived with her parents at Shoehall and worked as a domestic. She died on 12th Aug 1916 at Shoehall.
  • Jane Allan Gullion, b. 13th Feb 1866 and d. at Shoehall on 7th Oct 1883.

Ann's and John's marriage record includes the notation that they are second cousins. John's parents were first cousins, as his grandmothers, Isabella Allan and Marion Allan (who married James Harcus) were sisters. Ann's paternal grandfather, David Allan, was their brother. John and Ann lived at Shoehall, Eday. At the time of their marriage John was a shoemaker, but in later years he was described as a crofter. Ann died at Shoehall on 29th January 1907, and John died there on 2nd August 1922, age 91. They are buried in the old Eday kirkyard:
