Stout Genealogy

Members of this Stout family came to Westray from Fair Isle in the mid 1830s. Stout and Leslie genealogy becomes intertwined with no less that three Leslie sisters marrying into the Stout family: Jean Leslie, Christian Leslie and Isabella Pottinger Leslie. Subsequently, a Leslie (not necessarily related to the Leslie sisters) married two William Stouts from this family.

Thomas Stout (b. 1756, Fair Isle) m Grizel Smith (b. abt 1770 Fair Isle)
Children included:

  • George Stout (b. 1796, Fair Isle) m (1) 1820 Ellen Wilson (b. abt 1799); (2) 1836 Ellen Stout (b. 1796)

    Children of George Stout and Ellen Wilson included:
    • Wilhelmina Stout (b. 1821, Fair Isle)
    • Margaret Stout (b. 1823, Fair Isle)
    • Lawrence Stout (b. 1826 Fair Isle) m Jean Leslie. Jean’s sister Christian Stout married Lawrence’s cousin Jeremiah Stout while her sister Isabella Pottinger Leslie married Lawrence’s half brother George Stout.

      • Ellen Stout (b. 1851)
    • Thomas Stout (b. 1827, Fair Isle)
    • James Stout (b. 1830, Fair Isle) m Margaret Seatter
      Children included:
      • Betsy Stout (b. 1860) m James Gullion (son of John Gullion and Ann Allan)
    • Marjory Stout (b. 1834, Fair Isle)

    Children of George Stout and Ellen Stout included:
    • John Lindsay Stout (b. 1840, Westray) m Stewart Seatter
      Children included:
  • John Stout m Barbara Eunson (b. 1801, Fair Isle)
    Children included:
    • Jeremiah Stout m Christian Leslie. Christian’s sister, Jane Leslie, married Jeremiah’s half brother, Lawrence Stout.
      Children
      • John Stout (b. 1857)
      • William Stout (b. 1860) m Mary Thomson Leslie (b. 1872), who had been married previously to William Bruce Stout (b. 1865), the son of Lawrence Stout and Jean Leslie. The William Stouts were first cousins.
