Peter Harcus (Hercus) and Jessie Moodie

Peter Harcus, b. 26th July 1872, Doggerboat was the third of eight children born to Peter Hercus and Margaret Drever.

He married Jessie Moodie in Lady Parish, Sanday on 17th Dec 1908. Jessie was born about 1881, daughter of David Cormack Moodie and Ann Firth Leslie. Peter and Jessie lived their working life at Doggerboat where he was a lobster fisherman. They had a family of eight, two daughters and six sons:

  • Peter Harcus b. 1909 (twin) who was harbour master in Sanday
  • Andrew Harcus (Hercus) b. 1909 (twin) who went south and joined the police. He was stationed in Linlithgow in 1928 and subsequently moved to Glasgow. Andrew married and had family.
  • Annetta (Netta) Stewart Harcus b. 1913
  • Thomas Leslie Harcus b. 1915
  • Margaret Ann Harcus b. 1918
  • William Moodie Harcus b. 1923

Peter Harcus at Galtyha



Peter and Jessie moved to Galitha, Eday around 1943. Peter died on 28th January 1955, aged eighty two and Jessie on Christmas Day 1966. She was eight five. There is a gravestone for them in the old section of St Olafs cemetery, Kirkwall, which also records the death in the Second World War of their son, Gillies Harcus.
