Introduction / The Island / Religious Life / Burial Ground / Pharay Gravestones Pharay Gravestone - 11
"Erected by ___ ____ Peter Hercus ___ _____, aged 50(?) years ___." This is a particularly weathered gravestone. It is thought that Peter Hercus could be the Peter Hercus who was drowned when transporting a cow to Eday in 1887. Peter had a son and grandson with the same name. Peter's son left Pharay for Galtyha, Eday and is not buried in Pharay The name "Peter Hercus" is lower down the stone while the top part is indecipherable. It is noted that Peter's first wife
died in 1866 and also two of their young children in the 1860s.
