Robert Groat and Ann Tulloch

Robert Groat was the oldest son of Stewart Gullion Groat and Ann Drummond. He was born on 26th January 1855 at the Ness, his mother's family home. He married Ann Tulloch 24th January 1878 at Greenbank, Eday. Ann, daughter of Peter Tulloch and Christina Hay, was born on 21st November 1853 and baptised on 11th December 1853. Robert and Ann had five children:

  • Robert (Bob) Stewart Groat, b. 1878, Eday who married late in life his first cousin Jessie Ann Tulloch, b. 1884. They had no family. Robert spent some time in Canada working for the Hudson's Bay Company, but returned to Orkney and spent his final years in Kirkwall.
  • John Groat, b. 1880, Pharay, who married a distant cousin Ann Hercus in May 1907, South Leith Edingurgh. Ann was the daughter of Peter Hercus and Margaret Drever. They lived in Edinburgh and had two daughters. John died 25th June 1924.
  • Peter Groat, b. 1885, Pharay who married a Drever and had three daughters, one of whom went to Canada.
  • Stewart Groat, b. 1892, Eday
  • William (Billy) Groat, b. 1898, Eday who married Rose A. F. Miller 1st Jan 1921. They lived at Calfsound, Eday and had two sons.

The family initially lived at Hill, one of the Lakequoy houses, but in the late 1880s moved to Furrowend, Eday. Robert was a crofter; he died at Furrowend on 21st January 1928, less than a week before his 73rd birthday. Ann had predeceased him.
