James Gullion and Flora Fraser

James Gullion was the son of James Gullion and Janet Scott, baptised on 8th April 1837. In 1851, he was with his parents at Newark, Eday. By this time it is believed his older brothers George and William had immigrated to Canada to work for Hudson's Bay Company. James followed and left Stromness, Orkney aboard "The Prince of Wales" about 5 July 1856. He entered service with HBC as a labourer, mainly at Edmonton, Northwest Territories (NWT), and later, as a middleman (1859) and sawyer (1861). He married Flora Fraser at Edmonton on 18th September 1867. Flora, born on 25th October 1845 in Saskatchewan, was the daughter of Colin Fraser, born Scotland, and Nancy Beaudry. James and Flora had ten known children:

  • Janet Gullion, b. 6th Mar 1869 who married William James Harcus.
  • Nancy Gullion, b. 29th May 1871 and d. 7th Apr 1875
  • Elizabeth Gullion, b. 20th Apr 1873 who married, first Peter Linklater and second, William Henderson
  • Isabella Gullion, b. 6th Sep 1875 who married Mr. Williams
  • Caroline Gullion, b. 26th Nov 1877 who married Frederick James Tyson Flynn
  • James Ingram Gullion, Jr. b. 17th Mar 1880 and d. 21st July 1900
  • William Edward Gullion, b. 19th Apr 1882 who married Sarah Whitford
  • John F. Gullion, b. 17th Jan 1885
  • Stewart Gullion, b. 12th Mar 1887 and d. 20th Mar 1887
  • Sarah Gullion, b. 14th Aug 1888 who married Herbert Edgerton Diamond

James later became a boat builder with his brother George (1863-74) and then was a farmer in the Edmonton area.

Flora died on 21st April 1899. She is buried in Edmonton Cemetry in the same plot as her children Nancy and Stewart. Other children are buried in the same cemetery.

James Ingram Gullion died in 1902.
