James Gullion and Janet Scott

James Gullion was baptised on Westray on 1st November 1805, son of George Gullion and Isabella Allan. He married Janet Scott on Eday on 12th February 1828. Janet, daughter of William Scott and Janet Scott was baptised on Eday on 16th November 1801. James and Janet had six known children, born on Eday:

  • George Gullion, c. 17th Nov 1828 who apparently died in infancy.
  • James Gullion, c. 8th Apr 1837 who married Florian (Flora) Frazer.
  • John Gullion, c. 13 Sep 1841 who died at Long Wynd, Kirkwall, 4th Apr 1860, a seaman in merchant service, age 16.

James' occupation was generally given as a builder or mason in the various civil records, but when he reported his mother's death in 1856 he was listed as a shoemaker, the occupation of his brother John. James and Janet lived in Newark, Eday in 1851; in 1861 and 1871 they were residents of the Lodging House for the Poor. They died within a week of each other at Cairnequoy, Eday in 1875: Janet first, on 15th March and James on 21st March.
