Introduction / Westray Grays / George Gray and Margaret Seatter / George Gray and Jean Reid Isabella Gray and David ScottIsabella Gray, a daughter of George Gray and Jean Reid was staying at Brugh in Westray at the time of the first census in 1841 with a Thomas Meil (aged 60 years). Her age is given as 55 years. It appears that between 1841 and the next census in 1851 that she married shoemaker David Scott for they are both found staying at Newtown.
David Scott had been married previously to Janet Logie. The IGI indicates that they had a son, George Ceyward Scott, who was baptised on 12th September 1813. Janet died sometime after 1841. David and Isabella were in Pierowall in 1861, aged 76 years and 75 years respectively. His occupation is again given as shoemaker. Isabella Gray died at Pierowall on 25th February 1863, aged 77 years. The informant was her nephew-in-law, John Logie. There is an old lichen covered gravestone suggesting that her death was on 10th February 1863.
This is also slightly at variance with her baptism in 1783 according to the IGI. The death register clearly gives Isabella's parents as George Gray and Jean Reid. There does not appear to be any reference on the gravestone to David Scott and his inclusion on any readable stone elsewhere is not known. | ||||||||||||||||||||
