Ann Gray and James Foulis

Ann Gray married James Foulis with the marriage taking place in Papay on 19th September 1883. They already had a daughter and a son was born not that long afterwards. James was the son of John George Foulis and Margaret Thomson. He worked at various jobs during his life. In the 1881 census he is a farm servant at Vestness. In 1901, he was a general labourer. We see him recorded as a marine stoker at the time of his second marriage and later again he was a general labourer for a milling company. He lost a hand in an accident with farm machinery and after that he is recorded as a storesman for the company.

The family moved to Kirkwall about 1884 and remained there. They had the following children:

  • Ann (Annie) Foulis born 9 June 1882 at Quoyolie, Papay. She married her cousin, William Gray on 21st June 1923 in Holm.
  • James Foulis, born 6 March 1884, Newhouses, Papay.
  • Isabella Gray Foulis, born 10 May 1885, Kirkwall, died 5 March 1890 Kirkwall.
  • Margaret Thomson Foulis, born 4 May 1887, Kirkwall, died young.
  • David Gray Foulis, born 11 December 1889, Kirkwall.
  • John (Jock) William Gray Foulis, born 4 November 1891, Kirkwall
  • George Foulis, (Gunner) born 7 August 1894, Kirkwall who married Margaret (Maggie) Gray, the daughter of William Gray and Georgina Rendall. They had two daughters and a son. They moved from Orkney to the Edinburgh area.
  • Jane (Jean) Gray Foulis, born 13 November 1897, Kirkwall. Married John Gray son of William Gray and Georgina Rendall.
  • Alexander (Alex) Arbuthnot Foulis born 5 March 1900, Kirkwall

Ann Gray died on 12th November 1915, at their son, James's farm on Flotta. Her husband, James Foulis, remarried her younger sister, Isabella Gray.
