Mary Tulloch and Alexander Miller

Mary Tulloch was a daughter of John Tulloch and Janet Sandison, and was born in Westray on 3rd September 1854. She was recorded with her parents at Nearhouse in the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

Mary married Alexander Miller (a labourer, born in Glasgow about 1844) in Westray on 25th March 1873, and they had the following children:

  • Mary Ann Miller, born 9th October 1872, and died 16th September 1874
  • Margaret Miller, born 13th June 1874, and died 26th September 1874

(Both of the above children died of bronchitis.)

  • Mary Ann Miller, born 10th August 1875
  • John Miller, born 23rd September 1877
  • Elizabeth (Lizzie) Jane Miller, born 29th July 1881
  • Alexander Miller, born 16th October 1883
  • Janet Miller, born 30th December 1885
  • James Hewison Miller, born 3rd July 1887

The family was at Fueld/Feuld/Feold in the 3 censuses from 1881 to 1901. The census record for the household in 1891 is shown in the following table.

In 1901 Alexander's occupation was "quarryman". Only Janet and James were still in their parents' household, but the younger Alexander wasn't far away - he was a cattleman at Noup, Westray.

Alexander died on 1st December 1914, aged 70 years, and Mary died at the age of 74 years, on 20th March 1929. They are buried in Westray.
