John Rendall and Janet Paterson

John Rendall (b. 20th February 1855) was the second youngest of the seven children of William Rendall and Marjorie Lennie. He was born at Peatwall in Westray.

He was at Peatwall with the family in 1871 and a farm servant at Skaill when he married Janet Paterson (b. 6th February 1857) on 6th September 1879. Janet was the daughter of farm servant Charles Paterson and Ann Groat from South Hammar.

The family stayed at Quoybirse, where most of their children were born. John and Janet had six children:

  • William Rendall b. 13th October 1879 who married Jemima Thomson Bain (b. 18th April 1878) the daughter of Hugh Bain and Betsy Thomson from Gorn. They had four children.
  • Mary Ann Groat Rendall b. 7th October 1881. She did not marry.
  • John Rendall b. 24th July 1883 who married Margaret Drever
  • May Lennie Rendall b. 1st June 1885 and died in Pierowall on 11th June 1972. She was unmarried.
  • Charles Paterson Rendall b. 9th September 1887 and died in Pierowall on 2nd September 1959. He was unmarried.
  • Jessie Rendall b. 6th August 1889 who married Henry Mowat Rendall from Ring in 1945. He was the son of James Rendall and Jessie Mowat. Jessie Rendall died in Pierowall on 13th September 1975.

John Rendall was lost at sea on 15th September 1889. He was only thirty five.

Janet and the family remaining had moved to South Hammar No 1 by 1901. Janet died on 10th August 1937 at the age of eighty.
