Introduction / Westray Grays / Archibald Gray / Lousia Gray and William Lennie

Marjorie (May) Lennie and William Rendall

Marjorie Lennie c. 2nd March 1815 was the fifth of the six known children of William Lennie and Louisa Gray.

She married William Rendall (c. 31st March 1816), the son of William Rendall, Longhouse and his first wife Margaret Work, on 2nd November 1839.

May and William were to have seven children:

  • William Rendall b. 2nd November 1839 who married his cousin Margaret Rendall
  • Margaret Rendall b. 12th January 1846 who married William Thomson and subsequently William Sandison
  • James Rendall b. 26th October 1851 who married Isabella Tulloch Scollay
  • George Rendall b. 1st November 1858 who married Robina Inkster Scollay (b. 16th January 1860) from Cubigeo on 11th April 1880. Robina was the daughter of William Scollay and Ann Inkster. It is thought that they left Westray.

By 1851, William was a farm servant at Skaill, with his family. Marjorie's younger sister Isabella Lennie was there as well with her husband John Swannie who was also a farm servant.

William and May had moved to nearby Peatwall by 1855, which they farmed. Their last two children were born there. Five of the seven children were at Peatwall in 1861, the two oldest being away. Their daughter Louisa Rendall had married by 1871 and formed a separate household at Peatwall with her husband Henry Drever.

The acreage at Peatwall seems to vary according to the census. William is shown as a farmer of 15 acres in 1861, 9 acres in 1871 and 10 acres in 1881.

William Rendall died at Peatwall on 7th May 1890 at the age of seventy four. May Lennie died there a year later on 24th May 1891 at the age of seventy six.
