Mary Seator Allan and Henry Reid

Mary Seator Allan was born on Westray 12th April 1847, the oldest child of John Allan and Elizabeth Balfour, and she was baptized the following 7th of July. In 1871 she immigrated to the US, settling in Chicago. There, on 16th September 1872 she married Henry Reid, an Orcadian born on Westray 17th February 1848, the only son of Robert Reid and Mary Harcus. Henry and Mary had nine children, all born in Kossuth County, Iowa:

  • Elizabeth Reid, b. abt. Dec 1874, who married Grant A. Salisbury abt 1897. He was a farmer in Kossuth County and they had a large family. Grant died 9th Oct 1928, age 63.
  • Robert Reid, died in infancy
  • Mary Reid, b. abt Aug 1878, who, abt 1904, married Henry R. Steinman, a farmer in Kossuth County. They had two children. Henry died 24th Apr 1922, age 53.
  • John Henry Reid, b. abt Aug 1879 who was a farmer in Kossuth County. He married abt 1904 and had family. He died 7th Sep 1937.
  • Benjamin (George W.) Reid, b. abt March 1881. He lived in Alberta, Canada on 320 acres.
  • Thomas A. Reid, b. abt Dec 1882 and m. abt 1907 and lived in Kossuth County.
  • Ralph Reid, b. abt Nov 1884, and died in Canada, 26th Dec 1909
  • Albert James Reid, b. abt May 1886 and lived on 320 acres in Alberta, Canada.
  • Walter S. Reid, b. abt May 1889, who married, had a family and was a mail carrier in Des Moines, Iowa.

Henry Reid immigrated to the US in 1869 and spent a few months in Canada before settling in Kossuth County, Iowa, just south of Minnesota. Before coming to the US he had worked as a stonemason for several years for Mary's father. After marriage the Reids returned to Henry's farm in Iowa where he was a very successful. He owned land in Iowa, Minnesota and Canada, had large orchards, and was a general farmer and dairyman. In 1903 he moved his family into the town of Algona so his children could have better educational opportunities. Mary died 11th August 1923, age 76, and Henry died 27th June 1926, age 78. They are buried in River View Cemetery, Algona, Iowa, along with their children Ralph and John.
