Peter Gray

Peter Gray was the youngest known child of Robert Gray and Marion Meal, and was christened in Westray on 12 January 1796. He married Margaret Scott in Kirkwall on 18 June 1821, and they had one known child, Peter Scott Gray, born 12th June 1822, and christened on the 19th June in Kirkwall.

Margaret presumably died, and Peter married Isabella Meal (born in Sanday about 1790) in Kirkwall on 17th March 1831.

The 1841 census records Peter and Isabella, with young Peter (age 15 years) in Harbour St., Kirkwall. Peter's occupation was vintner. Peter and Isabella were still in Harbour St. in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, but no further record has been found for the younger Peter.

Peter died in Kirkwall on 3rd May 1864, at which time his occupation as given on the death registration was innkeeper. The undertaker was the informant. Isabella died in 1869.

Their gravestone inscription reads:

Erected By Isabella Meil In Memory Of Her Affectionate Husband Peter Gray Who Died In Kirkwall 3rd May 1864 Aged 66 Years Also His Beloved Wife Isabella Meil Who Died 26th October 1869 Aged 80 Years
