Introduction / Barbara Allan / Westray Allans / George Allan and Margaret Irvine / John Allan and Jean Harcus

George Allan and Euphemia Dick

George was baptised on 2nd June 1816 in the East Parish of Westray, the son of John Allan and Jean Harcus. He married, on 10th November 1842, Euphemia Dick, baptised on 10th April 1817, the daughter of Robert Dick and Jean Groat. Some Westray OPR records reflect Euphemia's surname as Seator, or Dick Seator. Based on the 1841 census records and family lore, George was a tailor, although the 1861 census gives his occupation as sailor. It is possible that this is a transcription error of the word tailor. In 1841 he was at Storehouse on Westray. He is not found in the 1851 census, but in 1861 he and his family are at Allan House. Again, he is not found in the 1871 census although his wife and youngest daughter are at Broughton Place; perhaps he was away. No later record was found for either him or Euphemia; nor has a gravestone in their memory been found on Westray. It is not known what became of them.

George and Euphemia had six children:

  • Robina Allan, c. 24th Jan 1843, d. 21st April 1859
  • Mary Reid Allan, b. 23rd April 1846, c. 23rd July 1846. In 1861 she was living in the UP Manse on Westray
  • Tommima Allan, b. April 1848, c. 12th July 1848
  • James Henderson Reid Allan, c. 5th Nov 1850, d. 1862, Westray, age 12
  • Josephine Allan, c. 5th July 1853, d. 1869, Westray, age 17
  • Euphemia Allan, c. 5th Sept 1855

There is a gravestone with the following inscription:
