Thomas Smith Allan and Eleanor Spence

Thomas Smith Allan, the youngest son of John Allan and Jean Harcus, was baptised on Westray, on 23rd April 1830. He was a lodger in Kirkwall in 1851, and there he married Eleanor Spence. After the birth there of their first child in 1853, Thomas returned to Westray with his family. They were living at Allan House in 1861. Thomas does not appear in the 1871 census, but Eleanor and their children were at Broughton Place. Perhaps Thomas had already left for Canada, as the family emigrated there in the early 1870s.

Thomas and Eleanor had ten children. The oldest was born in Kirkwall as noted, the youngest was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and the rest were all born on Westray.

In the 1881 Canadian census, the family was living in Hamilton, Ontario. Thomas was a dry goods merchant, the three oldest daughters were seamstresses, son Thomas was a shirt cutter and John was a lithographer. Thomas died in Hamilton on 22nd April 1884.
