Elizabeth Allan and James Scott

Elizabeth Allan, daughter of John Allan and Elizabeth Balfour was baptised on Westray on 26th August 1857. In the 1881 census, she was living at Greeno 'Halbreck with her maternal grandmother, Hannah (Mary) Balfour. In 1887, Elizabeth married James Scott. In 1891 they were living at Newbigging No.2, and in 1901 they were living at 9 Gill Pier and James was the Harbourmaster.

Elizabeth and James had at least six children:

• John William Scott, b. about 1889, drowned 8th March 1907, age 19

• Elizabeth Scott, b. about 1893

• James Scott, b. about 1895 who married Davina Rendall Meil, the daughter of John Meil and Jean Rendall

• Adamina Scott, b. about 1896

• Thomas Scott, b. about 1898

• Anne Victoria Scott, b. about 1901

Elizabeth died on 30th April 1906, at age 48. The gravestone in memory of her and James reads as follows:

In Memoriam Erected by James Scott Harbour Master In memory of his beloved wife Elizabeth Balfour Allan who departed this life 30 April 1906 aged 48 years also their son John William who was drowned by the loss of the Schooner Jack Snipe of Kirkwall on 8th March 1907 aged 19 years also the above James Scott who died 22nd Feby 1938 aged 75 years.
