William Allan

William Allan, the youngest son of John Allan and Margaret Bews, was baptised on Westray, 28th July 1798. He married Ann Drever on 2nd August 1818 and they had four sons:

  • John Allan, c. 4th Jan 1819, and apparently died before Sept 1821
  • James Allan, c. 3rd Mar 1820, who married Elizabeth Rendall
  • George Allan, b. about 1822, who married first, Ann Groat, second, Jean Cooper, and third, Betsy Stout.

Ann Drever apparently died shortly after the birth of her youngest son because William married for the second time on 3rd December 1822, May (Marjorie) Irvine. May was born on Fair Isle, Shetland, but had moved to Westray. William and May had two children:

  • Ann Drever Allan, c. 10th Sept 1823
  • Andrew Allan, c. 20th Nov 1824, who married first, Margaret Mason, a first cousin, and second, Williamina Moodie.

May died on 17th Feb 1866 at Sponess, Westray, at age 85. William then married Jean Kent on 25th May 1866, but they had no family. (After William died, Jean married Jerome Bews on 28th July 1872)

William appears to have lived virtually all his life at Sponess in the East parish of Westray, very near the Bay of Swartmill. He was a farmer there in 1841, and he was enumerated there in the subsequent three census records. His son Andrew reported that William died at Sponess, on 24th December 1871.
