George Allan

George Allan was born about 1822 based on census records. His birth is not recorded in the Westray OPR. He was the son of William Allan and Ann Drever, and his mother died soon after his birth or perhaps even at his birth.

George married three times:

    (1) Ann Groat
    (2) Jean Cooper
    (3) Betsy Stout

At the 1841 census George was living with his family at Sponess and on 11th December he married his first wife, Ann Groat. George and Ann had at least three children:

  • Anne Allan, c. 20th Mar 1847. She married a distant cousin James Mason, on 26th Aug 1866, his second wife. James was a son of Margaret Allan and John Mason. Anne died on 18th June 1907.
  • Helen Allan, c. 29th Nov 1849 who married George Tulloch in 1878 and died on 7th Nov 1916 at age 67.
  • William Allan, c. 25th Jan 1855, and d. 26th Jan 1855.
(Some family records indicate there was another daughter named Maggie, but no further information or documentation has been found.)

In 1851 George and Ann were living at Little House with their two daughters and Ann's 94 year old father Thomas Groat. Ann died on 21st April 1855.

George married for the second time on 23rd November 1855. Jean (Jane) Cooper was the daughter of James Cooper and Barbara Harcus. They had a daughter:

  • Barbara Allan, c. 29th Dec 1857 who died unmarried on 24th Sept 1885.

In 1861, George was living at East Thorn with his three daughters, wife Jean, and Jean's mother. George lived there the rest of his life and was a farmer. Jean died on 26th November 1898 at age 76.

George married the third time, a widow Betsy Stout, in 1901. He died on 3rd January 1910.

There are several gravestones in memory of this family on Westray:
