William Peace and Mary Walls

William Peace, the oldest son of William Peace and Mary Gullion was born about 1848 on Eday. He married Mary Walls, born about 1850, to Samuel Walls and Elizabeth Moodie of Sanday, on 28th November 1873 in Cross Parish (Sanday). William and Mary had six known children:

• William Peace, b. abt 1875

• Mary Ann Peace, b. abt 1877 who married William Heddle, a sergeant in the Royal Army on 22nd January 1902 at Benston Hall. William, born about 1866, was Mary Ann's cousin as his mother was Barbara Walls, sister of Mary Ann's mother.

• Charles Peace, b. abt 1882 who married on Eday and lived out his life at Benston Hall.

• Jemima Peace, b. abt 1884 who married a Mr. Thompson of Westray and went to Edinburgh

• Elizabeth Peace, b. abt 1885 who went to Edinburgh

• Isabella Peace, b. abt 1890 who married James Leslie, a farm servant at Carrick House, Eday and son of William Leslie and Betsy Scollay. on 24th May 1911

Also in the household in 1881 was William's nephew James Shearer, age 13. William lived most of his life at Benston Hall. He farmed about 30 acres, a substantial farm for the time. William died at Benston Hall on 19th February 1933, at age 83. Mary had predeceased him.
