Charles Peace and Rachel Tulloch

Charles Peace, son of William Peace and Mary Gullion was born on Eday about 1850. On 28th November 1872 he married Rachel Tulloch, daughter of Peter Tulloch and Sibella Tulloch. Charles and Rachel had six known children born on Eday:

  • Mary Peace, b. abt 1873 who married John Peace, her 3rd cousin and son of William Peace and Mary Miller on 5th June 1907 at Mounthoulie.
  • Peter Peace, b. abt 1875 who married Annie Scott Sinclair
  • Elizabeth Peace, b. abt 1879 who married Robert Paterson, a meal miller and son of William Paterson and Barbara Esselmont, on 5th Apr 1898 at Eday. They moved to Finstown on Mainland.
  • Jessie Ann Peace, b. abt 1883 who married John Reid of Groathall, Eday, son of John Reid and Jane Miller, 13th April 1904. They moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
  • Charles Peace, b. abt 1885 who was drowned during World War I
  • William Peace, b. abt 1887 who married Minnie Learmonth and had a shop at Mounthoulie. They had six sons. After Minnie died, William went to the US with his oldest son.

Charles and Rachel lived at Mounthoulie, Calfsound, Eday. As a young man Charles was a fisherman; he later became a merchant grocer. The old Eday kirkyard has a monument with the following inscription relating to this family:
