Christina Spence and James Spence

Christina (Christian) Spence (b. 21st September 1831 was a daughter of Edward Spence and Barbara Hourston.

She stayed with her parents at Crowbar, Eday as did her husband after they married on 9th December 1852. He was James Spence (b. 4th May 1826), the son of William Spence and Mary Liddle from Mid Guith. Christina and James were first cousins through grandparents James Spence and Jean Groat.

Christina and James had eight children:

• James Spence, born 17th November 1853 who married Ann Reid

• William Spence, born 20th October 1855; died 31st January 1885 at Crowbar. William was a fisherman.

• Edward Spence, born 28th March 1858; died 22nd May 1902 at Crowbar. He was also a fisherman.

• Christina Spence, born 1860. She was living at Crowbar at the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

• Catherine Mackay Spence, born 24th February 1863

• Mary Spence, born 25th October 1865 who married Robert Reid. Mary’s brother, James Spence, married Robert’s sister, Ann Reid.

• Barbara Spence, born 16th March 1868; died 3rd February 1885 at Crowbar

• John Spence, born 14th November 1872

James died at Crowbar on 20th March 1905 and Christina on 28th May 1913.
