Angus Harcus and Mary Jane Inkster

Angus Harcus and his wife Mary Jane Inkster lived at Cott, Pharay for six years from November 1933. They farmed the lands of Cott and of neighbouring Quoy, which house had already been vacant for some years

Angus Harcus was born 11th January 1892 at Brough, Westray, the son of Angus Harcus and Jessie Harcus. On 28th December 1917 he married, in Rousay, Mary Jane Inkster (born 1897), daughter of John Inkster and Jane Irvine, of Essonquoy, Sourin, Rousay. They had two children:

  • John Angus Harcus, b. 1918 and died 23rd July 1991. He married Elizabeth (Lily) Margaret Alexander and they had family. Lily died 24th November 1986.
  • Clara Margaret Harcus, b. 1919 who married James Seator and lived at Holland just prior to the people leaving the island.

The family was at the Rapness Mill, Westray when they decided to take the tenancy at Cott and Quoy.

Angus and Mary Jane arrived in Pharay in November 1933 with their teenage children. The children remained at Cott for five years leaving in November 1938 to take over the tenancy at Onziebuist, Egilsay. Angus and Mary Jane remained in Pharay for one more year before also going to Onziebuist.

Angus died 19th March 1960 at Balfour Hospital, Kirkwall. He was then living at Knapper, Rousay. Mary Jane died in 1974.
