Annie Drummond and William Hourston (Houston)

Annie Drummond (b. 3rd October 1862) was the eldest of the four children of John Drummond and Margaret Benston. She was brought up with the family at Bredakirk, Eday.

Ann had a son:

She married fisherman William Hourston at Bredakirk on 13th March 1889. William (b. 11th December 1862) was the son of Peter Hourston and Isabella Duncan from Roadside, Holm. No connection is known between these Hourstons and those from Pharay.

Annie and William emigrated to Racine, Wisconsin in 1889 and had six children:

  • Margaret E Hourston, born abt. 1890; died 1892
  • William A H Hourston, born 19th August 1891; died 20th April 1956
  • Anne B Hourston, born October 1894 who married but died on 27th October 1928
  • Edwin Benston Hourston, born 29th April 1897 who married Minnie Swanson (b. 1st June 1894) in Kenosha Co. Wisconsin on 18th November 1919. Edwin died on 1st May 1984 and Minnie in September 1985.
  • Stella Hourston, born 25th December 1899 who married Earl Randall (b. 1898). Earl died in 1965 and Stella in Kenosha Co. on 29th November 1999.
  • Alice Hourston, born 17th April 1905 who married Walter Kyle on 27th September 1924 in Kenosha Co.

In the US, the family spelt their name “Houston”. Annie’s son Albert, who had stayed with his grandparents at Bredakirk, emigrated to the US in 1905.

Some time between 1910 and 1920 Annie and William moved to Somers, Kenosha Co, Wisconsin and by 1930 they were in Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha Co when the household included a granddaughter, Elaine Hourston, then aged 13 years.

William died in Kenosha Co. Wisconsin on 21st October 1943 and Annie on 23rd September 1956.
