John Drummond and Margaret Benston

John Drummond (b. 3rd October 1837) was a son of John Drummond and Janet Reid.

He was with the family at the Ness in 1841 and 1861 but at the Hourstons at Wellpark, Eday in 1851 when he was designated a servant, aged thirteen. This was the house of David Hourston and Janet Miller. David was also born on Pharay, the Hourstons being one of the early families.

John married Margaret Benston (b.19th October 1836) on 19th December 1861 and they were at Bredakirk in Eday by 1871, the Benston family home. Margaret’s father, William Benston had died in 1865 but her mother, Ann Scott, still lived at Bredakirk with other Benson relations.

John’s younger brother, Alexander Drummond, married Margaret’s sister, Jemima Benston, three years later on 1st December 1864.

John and Margaret had four children:

John farmed at Bredakirk for the rest of his life. He died at Bredakirk on 8th February 1910. Margaret died in 1917.
