Barbara Ann Sinclair and Alexander McCauley

Barbara Sinclair (b. 18th April 1876) was the youngest of the children of Robert Sinclair and Mary Reid and just eight when they emigrated from Eday to Yorkton, North West Territories

She attended the Orkney School and Church. In 1897, she went to the Regina Normal School (college) and taught at the Orkney School, Sheno and Manor, Saskatchewan.

At Manitoba College, she met Alexander McCauley who had served in the South African Boar War with the Strathcona Horse Special Service in 1900/01. Alexander had been an accountant with Port Arthur Elevator after the war and then returned home to Edmonton to help his father in his real estate and insurance business. It was this that took him to Tofield, Alberta.

The McCauleys were active in the church in Tofield and Alexander played the organ for the First Presbyterian Church where Barbara taught Sunday school. They married on 23rd November 1909 at the home of Barbara’s brother in Yorkton, Robert Sinclair and his wife Annie Foster.

Barbara and Alexander had three children who all married.

Alexander died on 14th March 1948 and Barbara on 20th December 1951. They are buried in Tofield Cemetery, Tofield, Alberta.
