James Groat and Jane Drever

James Groat, son of James Groat and Mary Drummond, was born 30th May 1867 at Roadside, one of the houses at Lakequoy. On 14th June 1892 he married Jane Drever of Quoy, daughter of Thomas Drever and Mary Harcus, born 10th February 1868. They had the following children by the 1901 census:

  • James Groat, b. 1893 in Kirkwall
  • Thomas Groat, b. 1894, Kirkwall
  • Mary Drummond Groat, b. 1898, Kirkwall, who married James Drever in 1922 and lived in Kirkwall. (James, son of John Drever and Jessie Drever, is thought to be not otherwise related to Mary.)
  • Barbara Ann Groat, b. 1900 in Pharay who married John Drever Seatter from Quoy in 1926. John was the son of John Seatter and Ann Drever. This Seatter family had come to Quoy from Westray between 1903 and 1908, and their youngest son James Reay Seatter was named after one of the crew members rescued by the Pharay Heroes.

Evidently, James and Jane went to Kirkwall soon after they were married, but had returned to Quoy by about 1900. James was a Pharay Hero. Jane died at Shoeha, Eday 18th January 1936, at age 67. James died at Cliffdale, Cromwell Road, Kirkwall, 21st March 1950, age 82.
