Thomas Drever and Mary Harcus

Mary Harcus was the second wife of Thomas Drever, his first being Jane Groat from Quoy. Mary (c. 27th April 1832) was the daughter of William Harcus and Margaret Murray from North House, Eday.

Thomas had gone to Quoy when he first married Jane Groat and lived there for most of his life. Mary joined him when they married.

Thomas and Mary had two children:

  • Jane Drever b. 10th February 1868 who married James Groat. Their marriage was to bring Groats back to Quoy.
  • William Drever b. 16th August 1870 who married Jessie Harcus on 22nd November 1898 in Kirkwall. Jessie was the daughter of William Harcus and Jessie Reid. They had a son William R Drever who appears with them at Greenha, Eday at the time of the 1901 census. William died at Greenha on 12th June 1901. Jessie died at George Square, Edinburgh on 26th November 1922. William and Jessie’s son, William, went to Australia and subsequently to New Zealand. According to a gravestone in the Old Kirkyard in Eday, he died in New Zealand 29th October 1929, age 29.

Thomas was still at Quoy at the time of the 1891 census but died at Greenha in Eday on 26th July 1898. He was seventy eight. Mary died at Greenha on 16th September 1900. This was the house of their youngest son, William Drever, and his wife Jessie Harcus.
