Stewart Groat and Barbara Ann Peace

Stewart Groat was born on 31st July 1864, the youngest son of Stewart Gullion Groat and Ann Drummond. Although born on Pharay, by 1881 Stewart was an apprentice stone cutter lodging at Greenbank, Eday. This was the house of Peter Tulloch and his wife, Christina Hay. Their daughter Ann Tulloch had married Stewart's oldest brother, Robert Groat, at Greenbank in 1878

Stewart emigrated to New York City about 1888 where he worked as a stone cutter with several other men from Orkney. In 1890 he married Barbara Ann Peace in Manhattan. Barbara was born at Swenstay, Eday on 21st July 1866, daughter of William Peace and Mary Miller. She apparently arrived in New York shortly before her marriage, but several of her brothers were also in the US, in New York and Ohio. Stewart and Barbara had four children, all born in Queens, New York:

  • Mary Groat, b. Mar 1919 and married, about 1915, Bertram Maskiell, a police detective.
  • Anna A. Groat, b. Sep 1894, who married about 1918, Edwin Comfort. They had a daughter and divorced before 1930.
  • John S. Groat, b. 16th Sep 1895 or 1896 and died in Suffolk County, New York, Mar 1966. By the 1930 census John had been widowed.
  • Edith Groat, b. 1898.

In New York the family lived in Astoria, Queens. In 1930 Stewart and Barbara were in the household of their daughter Mary and her husband. Also there were Anna and her daughter and John.
