Introduction / Families / Groat / Robert Groat and Janet Guthrie / Robert Groat and Elizabeth Harcus / Stewart Gullion Groat and Ann Drummond Stewart Groat and Barbara Ann PeaceStewart Groat was born on 31st July 1864, the youngest son of Stewart Gullion Groat and Ann Drummond. Although born on Pharay, by 1881 Stewart was an apprentice stone cutter lodging at Greenbank, Eday. This was the house of Peter Tulloch and his wife, Christina Hay. Their daughter Ann Tulloch had married Stewart's oldest brother, Robert Groat, at Greenbank in 1878 Stewart emigrated to New York City about 1888 where he worked as a stone cutter with several other men from Orkney. In 1890 he married Barbara Ann Peace in Manhattan. Barbara was born at Swenstay, Eday on 21st July 1866, daughter of William Peace and Mary Miller. She apparently arrived in New York shortly before her marriage, but several of her brothers were also in the US, in New York and Ohio. Stewart and Barbara had four children, all born in Queens, New York:
In New York the family lived in Astoria, Queens. In 1930 Stewart and Barbara were in the household of their daughter Mary and her husband. Also there were Anna and her daughter and John. | |||
