Jean Gray and James Miller

Jean Gray (b. 31st March 1789), the youngest daughter of George Gray and Jean Reid, married James Miller (b. circa 1790). James was shipwrecked and drowned on 15th December 1830 at the age of forty.

Six children have been identified:

  • Margaret Traill Miller, b 12th January 1818 and baptised 16th January 1818
  • Mary Miller b. 1819 who died in 1844.
  • Jean Miller, c. 6th November 1821.
  • Isabella Miller b. 29th December 1823, c. 3rd January 1824 who married James Logie and Jonathan Moar.
  • Ann Miller b. 14th August 1829, c. 4th September 1829 who married William Harcus

Jane lived at Glen in Westray from the 1841 census, when she is described as a widow. Her two youngest children were living with her at that time.

Her son, James Millar, had married by the 1851 census but still stayed at Glen with his family. Anne Miller stayed with her mother, who is described as a sailor's widow.

By the 1871 census, Jean Gray had moved from Glen to Gallowhill, where she stayed with her daughter, Anne Miller, and her family.

She died on 22nd January 1879 at the age of 94 years.
