Christina Rendall and John David Reid

Christina Rendall (b. 14th October 1830) married John David Reid, the son of Richard Reid and Marjory Rendall from Banks in 1860. John came from Westbreck although the Reids were of Eday descent. He was farming at Banks when they got married while Christina was a domestic servant at Cleat.

By the 1861 census, they are at Storehouse No1 at Cleat in Westray when John Reid's occupation is given as blacksmith. John's brother, James Reid, completes the household. He was four years younger than John and was the blacksmith's apprentice.

Catherine and John moved from Westray to Stronsay between around 1868 and appear in subsequent censuses in that island.

They were to have five children:

  • George Corsie Reid b. 5th November 1861 at Storehouse of Cleat, Westray
  • Thomas Reid b. 5th July 1863 at Storehouse of Cleat, Westray who married Jemima Elizabeth Marwick from Rousay. They were staying at the Watermill on Papa Stronsay with daughters Elizabeth Reid (b. circa 1885) and Tomima Reid (b. 26th May 1887) at the time of the 1891 census. By 1901 they were at Milltown No 2 on Stronsay. Daughter Elizabeth was not part of the household but there was a son James Allan Reid (b 15th August 1886). Thomas was a farm servant working with the horses at this time
  • David Reid b. 9th May 1866 at Acreness, Westray
  • John Reid b. 26th August 1868 in Stronsay
  • Barbara Jane Reid b. 2nd July 1873 at Acreness, Westray

There may have been another daughter, Jean Reid.

The family lived at Clayquoy, near Mill Bay in Stronsay for a time and then at Holland (1880), Sound (1881) and the Ness (1891). Only their son David Reid and his sister Barbara Jane Reid were at the Ness by 1901. David's occupation was given as farmer's son.
