Catherine Rendall and George Harcus

Catherine Rendall was born at Banks in Westray on 4th September 1855. She was the fourth child to John Rendall and Barbara Gray. She married George Harcus from Stoneyhall in 1876. George was the son of fisherman William Harcus and Ann Drever. George's father had died when he was just nine years old.

Catherine went to live with George and his mother at Stoneyhall in the Skelwick District of Westray where George farmed some 13 acres.

Catherine and George had four children:

  • Joan Harcus b. 29th September 1878 who married Peter Miller (b. 1870) a vanman from Bucklesberry in 1905. He was the son of Peter Miller and Ann Rendall. They stayed at Wall Cottage subsequently moving to Surrigar and running a grocer's shop. They had four children. Peter Miller died on 11th August 1928, aged fifty three. Joan died at Surrigar on 13th 1956 at the age of seventy seven.
  • Mary Harcus b. 8th February 1880 who married John Miller (b. 1875) from Taftend in 1910. He was the son of William Miller and Jane Hourston. They emigrated to Edmonton, Alberta in 1911 and had three children: Albert William Miller (b. 1912), George Harcus Miller (b. 1915) and Catherine Margaret Miller (b. 1918).
  • William Harcus b. 8th November 1888
  • David Harcus b. 10th March 1891. David and his brother William Harcus emigrated like their sister. They both married.

George Harcus died on 27th April 1933 at Stoneyhall. Catherine Rendall died there on 10th March 1941 at the age of eighty five.
