Jean Rendall (b. 13^th May 1858) was the third of the five children of Jean Rendall and John Rendall. When she was twenty one, she married James Walls from Sanday. This was in December 1877.

James was the son of James Walls and Barbara Shearer. He was a farm servant. By the birth of the twins at Pierowall, Westray in 1882, he was working as a stonemason.

They had at least four children, three of which were born in Westray:

• James Walls b. 9^th November 1877

• Jane Ann Wall b. 1880 in Kirkwall

• John Walls b. 20^th July 1882

• Barbara Walls b. 20^th July 1882

Jean and James were staying with her parents at Stonysteps (or Stone Stair) in Pierowall in 1881. The family subsequently left the island.
