The family moved to Breckowall and then Stonysteps in Pierowall where they were prior to 1881. He had previously been an agricultural labourer but became a foreman fishcurer. By 1891, John is sixty eight and his occupation according to the census is a general day labourer. This has changed to butcher by 1901 when he is seventy eight.

John died at Brough on 18th April 1905 at the age of eighty two. Jean Rendall died at Breckowall on 29th August 1908. She was seventy eight.
