Introduction / Westray Grays / Archibald Gray / Mary Ann Gray and John Tulloch / William Tulloch and Elizabeth Drever

Mary Tulloch and John Logie

Mary Tulloch was the daughter of William Tulloch and Elizabeth Drever, and was baptised in Westray on 16th December 1833. She was with her father and siblings at Nether Feold, Westray, in the 1841 census, and in 1851 she was a servant at Breckaskail.

Mary married John Logie (son of John Logie and Isabella Hewison, born in Westray in 1831) on 29th January 1858, and they had the following children:

  • Elizabeth Logie, born 25 January 1859
  • Alexander Wither Logie,. born 1 August 1862, and died at the age of 18 days.
  • Ann Scott Rendall Logie, born 14th August 1863. She married John Muir (a fisherman, born about 1840, son of John Muir and Marjory Logie, and widower of Jessie Smith. John and Ann were first cousins, since his mother and her father were siblings.)
  • Mary Logie, born 2nd November 1865
  • John Logie, born 29th February 1868
  • William Logie, born 18th February 1870. He died on 22nd January 1871.

Mary died 24th February 1870, according to the Death registration, although the monumental inscription gives 5th February 1870 as the date of her death.

John Logie married Jane Goar on 14th July 1870, and they had several children as well. The following entry describes their household in the 1871 census, before Jane's children started arriving.

1871 - Backarass, Westray

There are two monuments in Westray which relate to this family. Sons William and Alexander did not survive, of course, and it appears that there was a third child of whom we so far have no record.
